In Centralized Traffic Control (CTC) territory, as here on the UP across the Mojave Desert, trains operate according to signal indications, which supersede superiority. The CTC dispatcher set remote-controlled turnouts and interlocking signals to hold a westbound freight at a siding, allowing eastward train 38, the Pony Express, to proceed on its schedule.
