Santa Fe at Del Mar, Calif.

The fireman on a Los Angeles–San Diego passenger train looks back for a highball at the Del Mar, Calif., station in the late 1940s. The grade crossing is protected by a crossbuck with “Santa Fe” lettering on the post and a cantilevered wig-wag signal, while a speed board proclaims limits of 70 mph for passenger trains and 50 mph for freights.
