ROBERT D. KREBS: His meteoric rise to President of Southern Pacific was just the beginning. As CEO of ATSF he staved off a corporate raider and helped build the road's burgeoning intermodal business, then went on to knit together the disparate factions of Burlington Northern Santa Fe. Though the STB put the brakes on his vision of a BNSF/CN mega-railroad, Krebs, who retired in 2001, could very well be the prototype for the 21st century rail executive.
